On Wednesday, December2, 2020, the third installment of the "Hosei University Rooftop Gardening Maintenance Project," the " NEW SPRING vs. Beloved Garden at Hosei University full of commitment" edition, was held.

The Green Terrace is the only remaining rooftop garden on the Ichigaya Campus, which was created in 2005 through a process unique in Japan, in which students participated in the entire process of rooftop gardening, from planning to design, construction, and maintenance.

In FY2020, at the "Green Terrace", we aim to make it "the beloved garden at Hosei University" as a " REAL GARDENER ", conscious of the habitat and growing space for trees, plants, and living things including birds and butterflies that come to play in the garden.

First, Mr. Enomoto of the Environment Center will introduce the history of the Green Terrace, its position in the local biotope network, highlights of the garden, and the "mosses" to be planted in the third phase, as well as their habitats in the neighborhood (the national natural treasure "Hikarigoke" lives in the ruins of Edo Castle), black pine, yaburan, and others, The participants observed "living things" inhabiting Hyotan Pond. This time, we also planted "Kurume azalea" and "pak choi" at the request of the members.

Project members worked hard to create a garden for " NEW SPRING" by potting up "hibiscus" that had been decorating the flower beds near the entrance and exit, and using yaburan (which is expected to help mitigate climate change), Japanese hollyhock, Japanese sphagnum moss, snails moss, and chamomji moss, and Japanese black pine, which decorates the area for the Japanese New Year.

In the flower beds, we planted "green cones" of the cypress family, which are expected to grow 30-50 cm per year, and 150 bulbs with a fragrance that birds and butterflies love, so that we can look forward to the " NEW SPRING " season of Christmas 2021.

The academic schedule has been hectic as we enter the busy season, but the "Beloved Garden at Hosei University" is well prepared for the " NEW SPRING " thanks to the members of the garden.

This year, "Beloved Garden at Hosei University" has completely become a habitat and growing space for birds, butterflies, and other creatures in trees, plants, and gardens, and we hope that we can overcome the new coronavirus infection and welcome the " NEW SPRING ".

  • On Friday, November 13, 2020, the second phase of the project, "Decarbonized Society vs. Beloved Garden at Hosei University," will be held.

  • Approximately 150 bulbs with a distinctive fragrance that butterflies seem to love are planted in the flower bed near the entrance
