Information on research activities

1. Ohara Institute of Social Problems

The Ohara Institute of Social Problems was founded in February 1919 by Magosaburo Ohara, a wealthy man from Kurashiki, Okayama Prefecture. While running businesses such as Kurashiki Spinning, Mr. Ohara was also actively involved in social programs. In July 1949, after the war, the Institute merged with Hosei University to form the Hosei University Ohara Institute of Social Research.

The mission of the Institute is to carry on and embody the lofty philosophy of its founder, Magosaburo Ohara, that "the solution of social problems requires fundamental investigation and research. To this end, we have established four pillars.

The first pillar is research activities centered on study groups and joint research projects consisting of experts from inside and outside the university. Approximately 10 research groups and joint research projects are active. The second pillar is to enhance the Institute as a specialized library and archive. The Institute has a number of rare books, including the first edition of Karl Marx's Capital (1867, with Marx's dedication to Kugelmann), the first edition of Adam Smith's The Wealth of Nations (1776), the first edition of Johann Süßmilch's The Divine Order (1741), and the Erzbacher Collection, as well as the Kyodo Kai Bunko and the Mukaizaka Bunko, Kondo Bunko (Sakai Toshihiko related materials), and others. The third pillar of the institute is to become an information and academic center. The institute is enhancing the Japan Labor Yearbook (93 volumes in FY2023), the monthly journal "Journal of the Ohara Institute of Social Problems," and its website. The "Journal of the Ohara Institute of Social Problems" is always highly regarded in the academic community and serves as a gateway to success for young researchers in the social and labor fields through its contributed articles. The fourth pillar is to make the Institute a place for international information dissemination and international exchange. In addition to providing prewar and postwar posters and image materials in an English-language guide through its website, the Institute holds an international lecture almost every year.

The Institute celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2019, and held a symposium in March 2019 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Ohara Institute of Social Problems and the 70th anniversary of the merger of Hosei University. Going forward, the Institute will continue to work to enhance its own reputation as an affiliated institute of Hosei University, while at the same time keeping in mind the need to enhance the reputation of Hosei University.

(1) Research Organization

The Institute's highest decision-making body is the Steering Committee. In addition, there is the Administrative Council to ensure the smooth implementation of operations. The Steering Committee meets once a month, with members selected from many faculties of Hosei University, in addition to the Institute's Director and full-time researchers. Administrative meetings are attended by the Director, full-time researchers, full-time staff, research assistants, and contract staff, and are basically held once a month, or as needed. In February of each year, a general meeting of researchers is held, attended by full-time researchers, concurrent researchers, adjunct researchers, visiting researchers, honorary researchers (6), and contract researchers (111), to report on the institute's activities during the year and hear their opinions. In FY2006, a Quality Assurance Committee was established to evaluate the Institute's medium- and long-term activities. Although not a formal body, a staff meeting is held once a month, attended by the director, full-time and adjunct researchers, full-time staff, research assistants, contract staff, and temporary staff, in order to communicate and coordinate daily operations.

2. Japan Statistical Institute

The predecessor organization of the Japan Statistical Institute of Hosei University was the National Institute of Capital Research, which was established within the Bank of Japan during World War II. After the war, the institute supported the reconstruction of statistics in Japan by the Statistics Committee chaired by Mr. Hyoue Ouchi, and contributed greatly to the modernization of statistics. Inheriting this history, the Institute has developed a wide range of research activities in the fields of a. research on statistical systems and policies of international organizations and countries, b. examination of international, national, and local statistics, c. implementation of surveys, and d. research through the use and processing of statistics, as an extremely unique institute specializing in statistics in Japan.

In 2006, the Institute was awarded the Ouchi Prize, the highest honor in Japan's statistical community, in recognition of these activities.

One of the Institute's contributions to society has been to invite statisticians from overseas to Japan and hold international workshops twice a year to introduce the latest statistical systems in other countries. In particular, the international workshop on business registers, which was not well known in Japan before the workshop, led to the development and expansion of Japan's business registers (business establishment population database). In recent years, in anticipation of the shift from input-output tables to supply and use tables in government statistics, we have been conducting research that will lead to the development of the statistical system that will serve as the foundation for such a shift, and we are also working to build an archive of the input-output tables that have been produced in Japan to date. In addition, the institute is also engaged in activities to promote the use of statistics, such as providing an area for undergraduate students to use statistics to prepare their theses and reports.

The Japan Statistical Institute of Hosei University does not have a full-time research staff, but consists of research members (including the director) and visiting researchers from outside the institute who are concurrently working for the faculty. In addition to the research projects approved by the Institute's Steering Committee, which meets regularly, the Institute initiates and implements various research projects, such as scientific research projects, with the Institute members as core members. In addition to the institute members and visiting researchers, various publications such as the "Institute Bulletin" provide a forum for the publication of research results to statisticians in academia and government statistical agencies.

5. Institute for Okinawan Studies

The Okinawa Institute of Culture was established in July 1972, after Okinawa's reversion to Japan, and over the past 50 years has accumulated research results as a center for Okinawan studies and has steadily built a track record as a training ground for researchers. The Institute is the only permanent facility of its kind among university-affiliated research institutes in mainland Japan that conducts research on the history, culture, language, and society of Okinawa and the Amami region.

The philosophy and purpose of the Institute's establishment is to clarify the culture of Ryukyu/Okinawa, with its unique climate and history, at a high academic level in many fields of the humanities and social sciences, with a view to comparative research with the cultures of the surrounding areas. As the number of foreign researchers studying Ryukyu/Okinawa culture is increasing, one of the important objectives of the Institute is to play a key role in the information network of Okinawan studies linking Japan and the rest of the world. In light of the current state of research, the flourishing of Okinawa studies that began with the reversion of Okinawa to Japan has come to an end, and the Institute now has a major role to play in thoroughly reviewing the accumulated research history, establishing new research areas and research topics, and training young researchers to take on these new areas and topics.

The "General Lectures on Okinawa," held 30 times a year since 2009, are open to TIRI students and the general public, and are led by TIRI researchers and other lecturers.

The Institute consists of a director (elected by the professors and staff of the Institute for a two-year term), a full-time staff member, and a faculty member, who is a professor of the University. Term of Office 2 one year)、 Full-time staff(1 Number of staff)、 Concurrent staff( Faculty members who are also members of the institute。5 Number of staff)、 Concurrent Research Fellows( Faculty members of other research・ Faculty members of other research and educational institutions who are also members of the institute。6 Number of staff)、 Visiting Fellows( Retired faculty members of the University who are also members of the Institute。15 Number of staff)、 Domestic Researchers( Those who reside in Japan and are engaged in research on Okinawa.。 The Institute consists of 197 visiting researchers, 26 overseas researchers engaged in Okinawan studies, and 10 fellowship researchers (graduate students who are expected to achieve outstanding results in the future).

The director and full-time, concurrent, and adjunct staff members are the main staff members in research activities, but domestic, visiting, and visiting researchers also participate in joint research projects funded by Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research and other grants. In particular, the cooperation of domestic researchers residing in Okinawa and Amami is indispensable for field research in these areas.

In terms of educational organization, we have established an "Incentive Researcher System" to foster young researchers. This program provides graduate students who are engaged in Okinawan studies and are expected to achieve outstanding results in the future with preferential access to the Institute's library and materials, as well as opportunities to participate in various research projects. The Institute of International Japanese Studies also offers several "Okinawa Studies-related lectures" to educate graduate students, including thesis guidance. In addition, the Institute holds several research groups on history, folklore, language, etc., and actively encourages students and graduate students, including visiting scholars, to participate in these research groups. In this way, the Center selects outstanding graduate students as Fellowship Fellows, and by having them participate in various study groups and survey/research projects, the Center aims to develop human resources for young researchers.

Ion Beam Engineering Laboratory

In commemoration of the 100th anniversary of Hosei University, a research institute using the first small accelerator at a private university, which combines "nuclear physics" and "semiconductor materials-related materials" research, and which, with the spirit of "freedom and progress" cultivated since its founding, will continually challenge everything and create new traditions to "break through the difficult circumstances of the turbulent 21st century. The University aims to contribute to the "construction of a sustainable global society" through education, research, and the return of "ion beam engineering technology" to society.

(1) Outline of the Institute

Ion beams generated by accelerators are used in two ways: first, to analyze solid materials by observing ions scattered by atoms in solids and X-rays produced by collisions with atoms, and second, to modify the electronic or engineering properties of solids by introducing different types of ions into them. The other is to modify the electronic or engineering properties of a solid by introducing different ions into it. In the field of analysis, studies are being conducted on the measurement of impurity distribution and semiconductor crystal defects in semiconductor crystals doped with impurities by various methods, such as silicon, a material used in ultra LSIs, and III-V compound semiconductors. Ion beam analysis is also an advantageous method for analyzing reaction processes in which compounds are formed by multiple atoms, such as alloy reactions, and research on microstructural analysis of compounds between semiconductors and metals is actively being conducted. For the purpose of modifying the properties of solids, efforts are underway to introduce species-specific ions into solids to create electronic materials with new functions or faster electronic devices, or mechanical materials that are more resistant to wear and have better lubricity.

Active research activities in collaboration with the Faculty of Science and Engineering and the Faculty of Bioscience and Applied Chemistry have made the Institute an internationally recognized leader in the field of ion beam engineering. In addition, the Institute holds an annual academic lecture meeting, the Ion Beam Engineering Symposium. In 1987, the International Symposium on Ion Beam Engineering was held under the auspices of the Institute. In 1987, the International Symposium on Ion Beam Engineering was held under the auspices of the Institute. The symposium was attended by leading researchers from Japan, the U.S., the U.K., Germany, France, the former Soviet Union, and ten other countries, and was highly regarded internationally.

The facilities of the Institute are also used for the graduation research of undergraduate students of the Faculty of Science and Engineering and the Faculty of Bioscience and Applied Chemistry, as well as for the research of graduate students in the Master's, Master's, and Doctoral programs, thus helping to foster distinctive researchers and engineers. In addition, a joint research system that enables joint research with other universities and private companies has been prepared and is producing results.

(2) Main Facilities

a. Bandegraph accelerator
This is an ion accelerator manufactured by Highvoltage Engineerring, USA, with a maximum acceleration voltage of 2.5 million volts. It mainly produces ion beams of hydrogen and helium for analytical purposes.

b. Tandem accelerator
This is a tandem type ion accelerator manufactured by Nissin High Voltage, with a maximum acceleration voltage of 1.5 million volts. It was introduced in 1992 with a private university research equipment grant from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan. It is used for experiments to introduce impurity ions into solid materials such as semiconductors (ion implantation).

c. Other facilities
Clean room (used for cleaning experimental samples, processing by photolithography, etc.)
Ellipsometer (used to measure the physical properties of thin films formed on semiconductor surfaces)
Laser Raman and photoluminescence microscopes (used for microscopic mapping measurements of Raman and photoluminescence spectra of materials)

(3) Research Organization

The institute is composed mainly of full-time faculty members of the institute and faculty members of Faculty of Bioscience and Applied ChemistryFaculty of Science and Engineering and the Faculty of Bioscience and Applied Chemistry, as well as faculty members of other faculties of the University and other universities. Serious consideration is given to the promotion of research, the development of research into new fields, and the planning of the introduction of new research equipment.

Institute for Comparative Economic Studies

The purpose of the Institute for Comparative Economic Studies is to conduct comprehensive research on the economies of Japan and other countries, particularly in Asia, with an emphasis on international comparative perspectives. Since its establishment in 1984, the Institute has produced many outstanding research results. In recent years, Japan's economy has become even more closely linked with other Asian countries. Therefore, the role of the Institute, which aims to develop a unique field of comparative research on the economies of Japan and other countries, has become even more important than before.

The Institute has organized a joint research team, led by researchers from Hosei University, with researchers from other universities, research institutes, and companies to promote creative research projects. Based on the results of these projects, we will also deepen research exchanges with domestic and overseas research institutions and researchers, and actively work to return the results of our research to society at large.

Center for Innovation Management

Hosei University's Center for Innovation Management aims to promote academic exchange and research on innovation and to publicize the results of such research through collaboration between industry, academia, and government. To this end, the Center collects, organizes, and makes publicly available books and materials on innovation (including books and materials on economics, management, and accounting) from Japan and abroad, and contributes to the improvement of research and study by utilizing the collected books and materials, launching various research projects, and supporting the publication of their results.

The basic concept of the SIIC, established in April 1986, was to be a deposit library for the purpose of collecting materials related to industry, economy, and management and establishing a system for research activities. The Center was established on the model of Harvard University's Baker Library to collect corporate histories and other materials published by government agencies, think tanks, corporations, and academic research institutions that had no fixed price.

Since then, the Center for Innovation Management Research has been transforming itself into an organization that studies the three i's of industry, information, and innovation through the following new initiatives We are taking the following new initiatives. In today's era of globalization, the Institute is advancing cutting-edge research initiatives in innovation management, while retaining its function as one of the largest deposit libraries in Japan.

  1. Analysis of innovation-related trends around the world, i.e., promotion of research on entrepreneurship, management innovation, organizational transformation, regional economics, logistics, venture finance, international management, etc., and promotion of international academic exchange.
  2. Publication of the academic journal "Innovation Management" (English title, Journal of Innovation Management) and publication of working papers and books consistent with the above objectives.
  3. Promotion of consortiums and research programs for industry-academia-government collaboration activities and social contribution activities.
  4. Promotion of domestic and international research exchange by holding symposiums and workshops.
  5. Social contribution activities and educational research through public lectures, public courses, and commissioned research.

The first specific initiative is the planning and editing of the academic journal "Innovation Management," which introduced a referee system in 2003 and published No. 1 in May 2004, followed by No. 2 in March 2005 and No. 21 in March 2024. We aim to form a center for innovation research by soliciting papers not only from within the university but also from outside the university, having them peer-reviewed by experts, and publishing excellent papers.

In November 2004, the Center launched a website that introduces its "Philosophy," "Establishment," and "Necessity of Research," as well as an overview of the Center as an affiliated research institute of the University, its activities, a list of publications of research results, and information on how to use its materials and facilities. The website also introduces the use of materials and facilities. In March 2014 and March 2021, the website was renovated to further improve convenience.

Third, since March 2005, we have distributed an e-mail newsletter, "IMAJ News," which introduces events and publications. The use of the e-mail magazine has made it possible to introduce research activities and disseminate information on new publications, such as working papers, in real time. The newsletter is distributed to approximately 2,000 people, including participants in past lectures and other events.

Fourth, in May 2009, in cooperation with 11 industry associations and 4 academic and research organizations, we established the "Distribution Industry Library," which specializes in collecting books and materials related to the distribution and consumer goods industries, and has been open to the public since April 2010.

The "Ryutsu Sangyo Library" was established to systematically collect and make available to the public books, company histories, biographies, reports, and other materials related to the distribution and consumer goods industries that cannot be collected by ordinary libraries or research institutions. We will continue to specialize in industrial management and adopt a one-stop collection method that covers materials on specific research themes such as distribution and consumer goods, and the implementation plan for the modernization of shopping arcades.

Fifth, in FY2010, we launched the "Hosei University Innovation Management Research Center Series. Some of the research results of the Center have been published in book series, with No. 26 being published in FY2023.

The Research Center for Innovation Management consists of a director, deputy director, full-time staff, concurrent staff, visiting researchers, and administrative staff.

Full-time and visiting researchers are selected by the Steering Committee from among those closely related to the Center's activities, and are appointed by President University with the prior approval of the Faculty Council to which the relevant faculty member belongs. The President appoints visiting and adjunct research fellows based on the recommendation of the full-time or adjunct research fellows from among those who can contribute to the objectives of the Research Center, with the approval of the Steering Committee. The term of office is two years for concurrent and adjunct research fellows and one year for visiting researchers, with reappointment not precluded. The Director and Deputy Director are selected by the Steering Committee and appointed by President with the approval of the Dean's Council. The terms of office are two years each, and reappointment is not precluded.

In selecting the full-time director and the associate director, the following criteria are required of the director: "The director must be engaged in serious research activities in the fields of innovation, information, and industry. The applicant must have authored a book (academic research book) or several research papers in the past five years. The new definition of "Research Center" was made more specific in 2010.

The management of the Research Center is deliberated by the Steering Committee. The Steering Committee consists of the director, deputy directors, and a few members of the concurrently serving director's staff. The term of office of the Steering Committee members is two years, and reappointment is not precluded. However, those who have served two consecutive terms on the Steering Committee may not be reappointed for the next one-year term. In addition, those who enter into a mandatory retirement extension during their term of office as a member of the Steering Committee shall resign as a member of the Steering Committee as of the end of March of the same year." The above terms were revised in FY2014.

Profiles of each staff member (research staff) and past staff members are available on the "Research Staff" page of the Center's website.

(2) Research Activities

The research activities of the Research Center are carried out by the staff members on their own initiative, mainly through research projects, and the results are published inside and outside the university in various forms, including research books (series), academic journals, working papers, and research reports. In addition, since FY2010, Hosei University Research Center for Innovation Management has launched the "Hosei University Research Center for Innovation Management Series" and publishes research books.

International Research Institute of Japanese Studies

The Institute was established in 2002, when the 21st Century COE Program of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) selected the "Construction of International Japanese Studies from Japan" and the "Comprehensive Research on International Japanese Studies" was simultaneously selected by the MEXT's Project for the Advancement of Academic Research at Private Universities (Academic Frontier Division). Since then, the Center has joined hands with two existing research institutes of the University - the Nogami Memorial Institute for Nohgaku Studies and the Institute of Okinawan Studies - to develop a variety of activities aimed at establishing international Japanese studies under the supervision of the International Research Center for Japanese Studies.

Since 2007, when the program ended, we have continued to promote research activities through the "Japanese Studies as Cross-Cultural Research" program, which was also adopted by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) as part of its program to promote the advancement of academic research. >The program has been continued by being selected for the "Reexamination of Japanese Consciousness: Past, Present, and Future of Japanese Consciousness" (research period: 5 years), and we are striving to further build international Japanese studies. This research activity ended on March 31, 2015.

Since then, the International Institute for Japanese Studies, which has been developing its own activities, has broadened its research focus to include different periods, regions, and fields, believing that it has almost established the problem consciousness and methodology of international Japanese studies as a meta-science (what international Japanese studies is). We have held study groups dealing with complex fields ranging from history, philosophy, and the history of ideas to literature, and we have also expanded the regions covered by our research. In addition, we take on new research challenges. Research from the perspective of Social Science International Japanese Studies (SSIJS), which mainly focuses on economics, political science, sociology, and anthropology, has the potential to universalize Japanese phenomena that are often thought of as specifically Japanese. While our focus is on Japan, we intend to devote ourselves to research to discover similar phenomena in other countries and regions. In particular, we maintain a close cooperative relationship with the European Institute of Japanese Studies in Alsace (CEEJA) and promote joint research projects.

In addition to the above research projects, our research project, "Complete Survey of Japanese Buddhist Art Materials in European Museums and its Application to the Study of Japan and Japanese Perspectives" (3-year research period) has been selected by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) for its 2010 "Project to Promote Japanese Studies Based on International Collaboration. This project targets European museums and art galleries that hold materials related to Japanese Buddhist art (Buddhist statues, paintings, Buddhist ritual implements, and votive tablets), and conducts a comprehensive survey and analysis of these materials in cooperation with the Japanese Studies Department of the Institute of East Asian Studies at the University of Zurich.

The project was completed as scheduled in March 2013, and the final evaluation was "A" (satisfactory results in light of the objectives of the project).

The data is being academically analyzed by researchers at Hosei University and elsewhere, and is being used as material for examining European perspectives on Japanese culture, or "Japan seen from the outside. In addition, from 2013 to 2015, the JSPS Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B), Overseas Academic Research, was adopted for "Basic Survey and Research on Japanese Buddhist Art in Europe and Dissemination of Information on Japanese Buddhist Art by Creating a Database" (PI: Josef Kleiner; sub-pI: Masashi Oguchi, et al), and from 2016, the JSPS Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B), Overseas Academic Research, was adopted for the same project. After the completion of this project in 2019, we will continue to organize and reexamine the vast amount of data accumulated up to that point and update the database as needed. After the completion of the project in 2019, we will continue to organize and reexamine the vast amount of data accumulated up to that point and update the database as needed.

Furthermore, the Institute and the Eco-regional Design Research Center, as the main applicant body, applied for and was selected for the "Formation of an Advanced and Interdisciplinary Center for Edo Tokyo Studies" as the theme of the Private University Research Branding Project for fiscal year 2009. The results of the activities of the "Edo Tokyo Research Center" established for this project have been highly acclaimed, and the Institute continues to cooperate with the project to the best of its ability.

The project was adopted by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) as part of its support for the formation of a strategic research base for private universities, and the Institute promoted a five-year research project entitled "Reexamination of Japanese Consciousness Based on International Japanese Studies Methods: The Past, Present, and Future of Japanese Consciousness" from 2010, which was completed on March 31, 2015. The project ended on March 31, 2015.

Going forward, based on the above research project, we will strive for the further internationalization and development of Japanese studies.

As part of this effort, we opened the "Database of Japanese Buddhist Art Materials in Museums in Europe" in FY2014 and the "Archives of Materials Held by the International Institute of Japanese Studies, Hosei University" in April 2015, making them available to researchers and the public, thereby returning the results of our research to academia and society. In July 2014, we established the Dr. Joseph Kleiner Memorial Hosei University International Japanese Studies Prize to encourage young scholars affiliated with foreign research institutions to pursue Japanese studies. Each year, we accept papers submitted from abroad. In December 2015, we held a ceremony to honor and commemorate the first recipient of the prize, and in March 2022, we honored the seventh recipient of the prize. We continue to accept papers for submission every year.

In addition, many members of the Institute participated in the establishment of the Edo Tokyo Research Center, which is mainly comprised of the Institute and the Eco-regional Design Research Center, and as center directors and project leaders, they have established a framework to systematically support the private university research branding project "Formation of an Advanced, Interdisciplinary Center for Edo Tokyo Studies. The Institute has established a framework to systematically support the private university research branding project "Formation of an Advanced Interdisciplinary Center for Edo Tokyo Studies.

Research Center for Micro-Nanotechnology

The center was established in 2003, following the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology's selection for the High-Tech Research Center Development Project of the "Project for the Promotion of Academic Research Advancement at Private Universities". The center promoted vigorous research in three research projects: 1) Micro-mechatronic devices and highly functional nanomaterials, 2) Distributed environmentally resistant nanoelectronic devices, and 3) Nanobiology of bioinformation and biofunctions.

In FY2008, our research project on the "Development of micro/nano technology for manipulation inside cells and simulation of biological functions" was selected by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan (MEXT) as a "Support Project for Formation of Strategic Research Infrastructure at Private Universities," and we have been conducting three research projects: 1) creation of nanobiodevices, 2) development of micro/nanostructure manipulation technology inside cells, and 3) development of technology for simulating biological functions. The research was carried out in accordance with the three basic themes: 1.

For five years from FY2013 to FY2017, "Next Generation Energy Conversion System Supporting Green Technology" was adopted by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) as a "Support Project for Formation of Strategic Research Infrastructure at Private Universities" and the research foundation cultivated up to now has been carried on to develop fundamental technologies for green technology to provide solutions for global environmental problems. From FY2022, a new research program is underway to further develop the results of this research.

(1) Outline of the Institute

The Micro/Nanotechnology Research Center was established in 2003, and in 2013, its research project on "next-generation energy conversion systems supporting green technology" was selected by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) for its "Support Program for Formation of Strategic Research Infrastructure at Private Universities" to develop advanced chemical process technologies that have a low environmental impact. The project is based on the development of advanced chemical process technology and ultra-fine processing technology, the development of high-efficiency photoelectric conversion devices, the elucidation of bioenergy conversion mechanisms at the molecular level, and the proposal of high-energy-efficiency computing and driving devices, as well as the development of renewable energy technology using materials without resource constraints, the creation of low-load energy devices for unknown application fields, the creation of bio-energy devices, and the development of new energy sources using plant-based biomass. The aim of this project is to develop "green technology" technologies such as energy sources, hybrid resource reuse and environmental purification technologies using plant-based biomass, bacteria, and photo-functional materials, and to develop eco-solution technologies as the basis for device applications based on high-efficiency energy utilization technologies. The project aims to develop eco-solutions technology as the basis for device applications based on highly efficient energy utilization technology.

The research staff consists of 23 concurrent researchers selected from the faculty of the Faculty of Science and Engineering, the Faculty of Bioscience and Applied Chemistry, the Faculty of Engineering and Design, and the Ion Beam Engineering Laboratory, as well as approximately 16 visiting researchers.

Since its establishment, the center has been equipped with large facilities that boast state-of-the-art performance, and these facilities have been used extensively not only by researchers but also by graduate and undergraduate students for their research and experiments, making a significant contribution to research and education at the university.

The center actively disseminates information by enhancing its website, holding open seminars, and introducing the research center at open campuses and other events.

(2) Main Facilities

a. Raman microspectroscopy
The Raman microspectrometer detects special vibrational modes in molecules by laser Raman spectroscopy to analyze constituent materials in green technology-related materials. Equipped with a laser beam scanning mechanism, it is capable of analyzing crystal and molecular structures and local distribution in the submicron-order micro region of a sample.

b. Photosynthetic Electron Transfer Reaction Analysis System
The Photosynthetic Electron Transfer Reaction Analysis System is an excellent device for nondestructively analyzing and evaluating the electron transfer activity of various components of the photosynthetic apparatus by tracking fluorescence changes derived from photosynthetic dyes and absorption changes of light at wavelengths specific to the electron transfer components.

c. Stacking molding machine
The laminate molding machine has one of the fastest molding speeds in the industry, thanks to batch surface exposure by a projector. It can flexibly handle multiple materials, such as rubber-like materials, to realize eco-solutions through 3D printing.

Center for Ecological Regional Design

The purpose of this research center is to research methods for true "urban and regional revitalization" that will usher in the "age of the environment"; the Eco Regional Design Institute was established in April 2004 and renamed the Eco Regional Design Research Center in April 2016. A key feature of the Institute is its unique approach that links <ecology> and <history> in order to revive Japanese cities and regions that are losing their environmental balance and cultural identity in a sustainable and unique way.

We work to solve problems by forming networks with experts in Japan and abroad, and by exploring multifaceted philosophies and methods. We will conduct in-depth research on the riparian space and natural environment of cities and teritorios (regions) by comparing them with other countries and regions, incorporating historical perspectives, and actively propose concrete methods for their revitalization.

In particular, we will place emphasis on presenting the city and its surrounding areas as a new concept of "Territorio," a new domain that integrates historical culture, socioeconomics, and water circulation. Our target areas include the Tokyo area, the Setouchi area, and Niigata.

The Research Center was established in FY2017 in cooperation with the Center for Eco-regional Design Research and the International Institute of Japanese Studies in developing the project "Formation of an Advanced and Interdisciplinary Center of Excellence in Edo Tokyo," which was selected for support under the "Private University Research Branding Project" of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology in FY2017 (Heisei 29). From FY2022, the next new stage of the project will be the "Edo Tokyo" Project, which will be conducted in collaboration with the Center for Eco-Regional Design Research and the International Institute of Japanese Studies, with a view to historical continuity. From FY2022, we will be engaged in a new stage of research activities that will look at Tokyo in the near future and propose a shift in values in Japan in the future, while keeping historical continuity in mind.
