University Philosophy

Hosei University was founded in 1880 as a private law school (Tokyo Hogakusha) for those who were awakened to the awareness of their rights and sought knowledge of law amidst the upsurge of the liberal civil rights movement. Since then, the school has nurtured a "liberal academic culture" that respects people's rights and recognizes diversity, and an "enterprising spirit" that aims to realize a fair society without being bound by anything.

In the 1950s, when the university was in its period of development, President Ouchi set forth three goals as "Our Desire": "Formation of independent and free individuals who can bear the burden of Japan's independence," "Development of a spirit that will contribute to the uplift of humanity throughout the world through learning," and "Development of human resources who will contribute to the improvement and development of Japanese people's social life. Today, the University is a university of the highest quality and the most advanced in the world.

Today, Hosei University expresses the spirit of "freedom and progress" that it has cultivated since its founding as "Practical Wisdom for Freedom" and defines it in the Hosei University Charter. Practical wisdom" here is distinguished from practical learning and aims to realize social values that are called the "common good," and refers to the intellect that can gather the necessary knowledge and information, make appropriate judgments, and put them into practice in each field in order to create a society in which people can live comfortably in every sense of the word.

Purpose of the University

The objectives of the University are as follows

  1. To nurture citizens who will build a new era independently, self-reliantly, and creatively, with a spirit of "freedom and progress" and the ability to make fair judgments.
  2. To contribute to the development of academia through the search for truth and "enterprising spirit" based on academic freedom.
  3. To contribute to the "building of a sustainable global society" by solving increasingly diverse global issues.
