University Degree Awarding Policy (Diploma Policy)

Graduate School of Humanities

The Graduate School as a whole recognizes the awarding of master's degrees to students who have attained the following standards through the acquisition of the prescribed credits and who have passed the examination of their master's thesis and final examinations, and the awarding of doctoral degrees to students who have passed the examination of their doctoral thesis and final examinations.

DP1. Have a certain level of communication skills, whether in one's native or foreign language.
DP2. Possess a certain level of logical thinking ability and be able to identify and solve various problems with this ability.
DP3. Acquire a certain level of specialized knowledge in each specialized field and a certain level of broad-based education.
For the master's degree, the student should have mastered the research methods necessary for his/her own research theme, and have acquired sufficient knowledge of the results and findings of previous research on that research theme.
DP5. For the doctoral degree, the student has the ability to contribute to the research field concerned by adding new and original knowledge to the research field concerned, in addition to the qualifications for the award of the master's degree.

The details of each department and institute are as follows.

Major in Philosophy Master's degree (Philosophy), Doctoral degree (Philosophy)

The degree of "Master of Philosophy" is granted to students who have earned the prescribed credits under the curriculum of the Major in Philosophy, acquired the knowledge and abilities listed below, and passed the examination of their master's thesis and final examination. In addition to the master's degree awarding policy, the degree of "Doctor of Philosophy" will be granted to students who have acquired these knowledge and abilities to a level that will enable them to contribute to academic development by further deepening their research in their own specialized fields, and who have passed the examination of their doctoral dissertation and final examination.

DP3. Students must have a certain level of specialized knowledge in philosophy and a certain level of broad knowledge.

For the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, in addition to the qualifications for the award of a master's degree, the student must have the ability to contribute to the development of the research field concerned and to the development of the wider academic field by adding new knowledge to the research field concerned and deepening the examination of the research.

Major in Japanese Literature Master's degree (Literature), Doctoral degree (Literature)

The degree of "Master of Arts (Literature)" is granted to students who have earned the prescribed credits under the curriculum of the Major in Japanese Literature, acquired the knowledge and abilities listed below, and submitted a master's thesis (or a minor thesis in the Literature and Creative Writing Program) and passed the examination. In the Doctoral Program, in addition to the above, students who have acquired the ability as an independent researcher to deepen research in their own specialized field and to add original and new knowledge in that research field, and the ability to teach younger students at institutions of higher education and research, and who have submitted and passed the examination of a doctoral dissertation at a level that will contribute to academic development, will be awarded the degree of "Doctor of Philosophy (Doctor of Literature)". The degree of "Doctor of Literature" will be conferred to those students who have acquired the ability to be an independent researcher and to teach future generations at institutions of higher education and research, and who have submitted and passed the examination of a doctoral dissertation of a standard that will enable them to contribute to academia.

DP1: Advanced and specialized knowledge of literature and Japanese linguistics from ancient to modern times.
DP2: The ability to read and analyze literature in the area of specialization accurately and critically.
DP3. The ability to formulate a research theme in the area of specialization and to think logically about it.
DP4: The ability to disseminate research results inside and outside the university in the form of conference presentations or academic papers. Major in English Literature and Linguistics Master's degree (Literature), Doctoral degree (Literature)

The degree of "Master of Arts (Literature)" is granted to students who have earned the prescribed credits under the curriculum of the Major in English Literature and Linguistics, acquired the knowledge and abilities listed below, and passed the examination of their master's thesis and final examination. In addition to the master's degree conferral policy, the degree of "Doctor of Letters" will be conferred upon students who have acquired the knowledge and abilities listed below to a level that will enable them to contribute to academic development by further deepening their research in their own specialized fields, and who have passed the doctoral dissertation review and final examination.

DP1: Students must have acquired the necessary research methodology for their chosen research theme in the relevant field.
DP2: The student should have a good understanding of the previous research on the topic.

Major in History Master (History), Doctor (History)

Students who have earned the prescribed credits under the curriculum of the Major in History, acquired the knowledge and abilities listed below, and passed the examination of their master's thesis and final examinations are eligible to receive the degree of "Master of Arts (History)," and those who have passed the examination of their doctoral thesis and final examinations are eligible to receive the degree of "Doctor of Arts (History).

DP1: Broad knowledge of history and advanced and specialized knowledge of one's area of specialization.

The Institute of International Japanese Studies awards the degree of "Master of Science" to students who have attained the following standards through the acquisition of the prescribed credits, and who have passed the examination of their master's thesis and the final examinations.

Students must possess a certain level of foreign language proficiency.
Students must possess a certain level of thinking ability to identify and solve various problems from an international and interdisciplinary perspective.
DP3. Students should have a certain level of expertise in various fields related to Japan, as well as a broad range of liberal arts.

The "Master of Laws" will be awarded to students who have reached the following standards through the acquisition of the prescribed credits.

The Graduate School of Political Science awards a "Master of Arts (Political Science)" to students who have earned the prescribed credits and have reached the following standards.
DP1: Students will have acquired specialized knowledge and broad knowledge of political science. DP2: Students will have received guidance from faculty members.
DP2. have established an appropriate research theme under the guidance of a faculty member, and have completed a master's thesis that develops original findings through appropriate methods and discussions based on sufficient previous research on the research theme.

Students who have earned the prescribed credits and attained the following standards will be awarded a "Doctor of Philosophy (Political Science)".

In the master's program, "Master of Science" is awarded to students who have earned the prescribed credits and passed the examination of their master's thesis. In this case, the examination shall be conducted based on the following criteria, taking into consideration both the research type, which requires originality and creativity, and the development type, which requires the ability to carry out projects by making full use of advanced information science and technology.

DP1: Sufficient knowledge in the applicant's area of specialization and the ability to construct novel concepts, etc.

* Doctor of Science

In order to be awarded a master's degree in the Graduate School of Policy Design, students are required to acquire a wide range of relevant knowledge and various research skills related to policy formation, as well as a broad perspective, a sense of the field, and a certain degree of practical experience. The resolution of various issues faced by the public policy field requires a high level of expertise and policy-making ability. In order to receive a master's degree from Institute of Regional Development students are required to acquire a wide range of relevant knowledge and diverse research skills for solving regional issues, as well as a broad perspective, a sense of the field, and a certain degree of practical experience. Therefore, a master's degree (academic) will be awarded to those who have earned the prescribed credits, passed the master's thesis review and final examination, and have reached the following standards.

DP1: Acquisition of specialized and interdisciplinary knowledge

DP3. review of existing research and development of theoretical frameworks
