History of Hosei University (HOSEI Museum)

The history of Hosei University can be traced back to the establishment of the Tokyo Law School in 1880, and in 1883, Dr. Boissonade, a professor at the University of Paris, was invited from France as a legal advisor to the government, and became the president of the school. The University opened the Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Economics.
Today, Hosei University is a comprehensive university with 15 faculties, School of Correspondence Education, 15 graduate schools and 3 institutes, 2 professional graduate schools, and 3 affiliated schools.
As the words of the school song, "Progressive Weather," written by Haruo Sato, suggest, Hosei University has nurtured a tradition of respect for freedom and enterprising weather throughout its more than 130-year history, forming a school culture of "freedom and progress.

Brief Chronology

1880 (Meiji 13) Tokyo Hogakusha (Koho Bureaus and Dogen Bureaus) established.
Founded in Surugadai, Tokyo, by Tetsu Kanamaru, Osamu Ito, and others, who were practicing lawyers in Japan.
1881 (Meiji 14) The Koho bureau of the Tokyo Hogakusha was spun off as the Tokyo Law School. (Chief Director: Masakuni Satto)
1883 (Meiji 16) Dr. Boissonade, a professor at the University of Paris (Agrégé), who had been invited from France as a legal advisor to the government, became the head of the school.
1886 (Meiji 19) Tokyo French School is established by the French Society, the predecessor of the Japan-France Society.
1889 (Meiji 22) The Tokyo Law School and the Tokyo French School merge and are renamed the Japanese-French Law School. Dr. Rinsho Minosaku became principal, further developing the school's free and fresh academic culture.
1903 (Meiji 36) The name was changed to the Foundation of Japanese-French Law School Hosei University in accordance with the Technical School Ordinance, and the Preparatory Course, the University Division, the Specialized Course, and the Advanced Research Course were established.
1904 (Meiji 37) The Law and Politics Rapid Training Course for students from Qing China was established.
1920 (Taisho 9) The establishment of a private university is authorized for the first time by the University Ordinance, and Hosei University becomes an incorporated foundation.
Faculty of Law and Faculty of Economics are established.
Hosei University becomes one of the leading private universities with a Pre-department of Law and a Department of Economics, as well as a Department of Pre-University Studies, a Department of Specialized Studies, and a Department of Research in each faculty.
1921 (Taisho 10) The university moves to a new school building in Fujimi-cho 4-chome, Kojimachi-ku (current Ichigaya Campus).
1922 (Taisho 11) Faculty of Law establishes the Faculty of Letters and the Department of Philosophy to become the Faculty of Law and Letters.
1943 (Showa 18) The School of Law was reorganized as the Faculty of Law and Literature, and the Faculty of Law and Philosophy was established.
1944 (Showa 19) Hosei University established Aeronautical Institute of Technology, the predecessor of the Faculty of Engineering.
1945 (Showa 20) Most of the school buildings in the Fujimi area were destroyed by fire in an air raid.
1947 (Showa 22) The Faculty of Law and Letters is reorganized into the Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Letters, and together with the Faculty of Economics, becomes three faculties. The School of Correspondence Education was established in July of the same year.
1949 (Showa 24) Established as a new university under the School Education Law.
1950 (Showa 25) The Faculty of Engineering is established, and Hyori Ouchi is appointed President.
1951 (Showa 26) Hosei University becomes an educational corporation under the Private School Law. New graduate schools (Graduate School of Humanities and Graduate School of Social Sciences) are established.
1952 (Showa 27) Faculty of Social Sciences established.
1959 (Showa 34) Faculty of Business Administration established.
1964 (Showa 39) Construction of Koganei Campus completed.
1965 (Showa 40) Graduate School of Engineering established.
1980 (Showa 55) 100th anniversary of foundation.
1984 (Showa 59) Construction of the Tama School Building completed. First-year students of the Faculty of Economics and the Faculty of Social Sciences begin classes at the Tama Campus.
1992 (Heisei 4) Graduate School of Sociology offers day/evening classes in Major in Economics, and Major in Business Administration is established, offering day/evening classes. 92nd Building (Graduate School Building) is completed.
1993 (Heisei 5) The departments of the Faculty of Engineering were reorganized into eight departments.
1994 (Heisei 6) Construction of the South Building on the Koganei Campus was completed.
1999 (Heisei 11) Faculty of Intercultural Communication and Faculty of Sustainability Studies were established.
Construction of the EGG DOME completed at the Tama Campus.
ISO 14001 certification acquired.
2000 (Heisei 12) Faculty of Social Policy and Administration and Faculty of Computer and Information Sciences established.
Boissonade Tower completed on Ichigaya Campus.
Completion of the Faculty of Social Policy and Administration Building on the Tama Campus.
Completion of the West Wing on the Koganei Campus.
IT Professional Course established.
120th anniversary of foundation.
2001 (Heisei 13) Department of International Economics established in the Faculty of Economics.
Graduate School of Policy Science on Society established.
2002 (Heisei 14) Department of Media and Communication Studies in the First Faculty of Social Sciences established.
Graduate School of Social Well-being Studies and Graduate School of Computer and Information Sciences established.
2003 (Heisei 15) Department of Lifelong Learning and Career Studies, Faculty of Letters Department of Psychology, Faculty of Business Administration Department of Business Strategy and Department of Markets and Management were established.
Graduate School of Social Sciences, Department of Environmental Management established. International Institute of Japanese Studies established.
2004 (Heisei 16) Department of Engineering and Design is established in the Faculty of Engineering and Design.
The Graduate School of Social Sciences was reorganized into seven departments: Graduate School of Economics, Graduate School of Law, Graduate School of Politics, Graduate School of Sociology, Graduate School of Policy Science on Society, Graduate School of Business Administration, Graduate School of Policy Science, and Graduate School of Environmental Management.
Establishment of the Graduate School of Law (Law School).
Graduate School of Innovation Management established.
Graduate School of Humanities is established as the Graduate School of Intercultural Communication.
Institute of International Japanese Studies established as a doctoral program.
Law School Building completed at Ichigaya Campus.
Micro/Nanotechnology Research Center completed on Koganei Campus.
2005 (Heisei 17) Department of Global Politics established in Faculty of Law.
Department of Business Economics established in Faculty of Economics.
SSI (Sports Science Institute) established.
Graduate School of Business Administration Major in Career Studies established.
Graduate School of System Design established.
Graduate School of Innovation Management, Department of Accounting (School of Accounting) established.
2006 (Heisei 18) Department of Frontier Bioscience established in the Faculty of Engineering.
Institute for Global Interdisciplinary Studies (IGIS) established.
Graduate School of Humanities (Major in Psychology) established.
Graduate School of Intercultural Communication established.
Fujimizaka and Shin-Ichiguchizaka school buildings begin operation.
2007 (Heisei 19) The three departments of the Faculty of Engineering and Design (Department of Architecture, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Department of Environmental Design) are reorganized to form the Faculty of Engineering and Design.
Construction of the Sotobori School Building was completed on the Ichigaya Campus.
2008 (Heisei 20) Faculty of Science and Engineering, Faculty of Bioscience and Applied Chemistry, and Faculty of Global and Interdisciplinary Studies (GIS) are established.
Graduate School of Policy and Creative Studies established.
Construction of the Ichigaya Tamachi Building completed on the Ichigaya Campus.
Construction of East Wing completed on Koganei Campus.
2009 (Heisei 21) Faculty of Sports and Health Studies established.
Renovation of the Faculty of Sports and Health Studies Building completed on the Tama Campus.
2010 (Heisei 22) Reorganized the Department of Social Policy and Administration in the Faculty of Social Policy and Administration and established the Department of Community Development and the Department of Clinical Psychology.
Major in Global Politics established in Graduate School of Politics.
Major in Frontier Bioscience was established in the Graduate School of Engineering.
Graduate School of Engineering and Design (Major in Architecture, Civil and Environmental Engineering and Design) is established.
2011 (Heisei 23) Department of Advanced Sciences established in the Faculty of Science and Engineering.
Construction of North Building and New Administration Building completed on Koganei Campus.
2012 (Heisei 24) Graduate School of Public Policy and Social Governance established.
Completion of the second phase of redevelopment of the Koganei Campus.
2013 (Heisei 25) Graduate School of Career Studies and Graduate School of Science and Engineering established.
Completion of the Central Building on the Koganei Campus.
2014 (Heisei 26) Department of Frontier Bioscience and Applied Chemistry reorganized into the Department of Bioscience and Clinical Plant Science and the Department of Chemical Science and Technology.
Ichiguchizaka Building completed on the Ichigaya Campus.
2015 (Heisei 27) Institute for Solidarity-based Society established as a graduate school.
2016 (2016) Major in Sustainability Studies established in Graduate School of Public Policy and Social Governance.
Graduate School of Sports and Health Studies establishes Major in Sports and Health Studies.
Cross-Degree Program in English between Graduate School of Science and Engineering and Graduate School of Computer and Information Sciences (IIST) is established.
Graduate School of Graduate School of Science and Engineering changed its name from Major in Systems Engineering to Major in Systems Science and Engineering, and from Department of Advanced Sciences to Department of Business Administration and Major in Business Administration, respectively.
Construction of the Fujimi Gate completed at the Ichigaya Campus.
English-language degree programs (GBP, SCOPE, IIST) were established.
2017 (Heisei 29) One-year Master's degree program in Major in Economics is established in the Graduate School of Economics.
2018 (Heisei 30) English language degree program (IGESS) established.
2019 (2019) Joint degree (double degree) program established between the Institute of International Japanese Studies of Graduate School of Humanities and the School of Japanese Culture and Economics of Shanghai University of Foreign Studies.
Construction of the Ouchiyama Building completed on the Ichigaya Campus.
2020 (2nd year of the 20th year of the 20th year of the 20th year of the 20th year of the 20th year) HOSEI Museum opens on the Ichigaya Campus.
2021 (2021) Completion of the reconstruction of the 55th and 58th buildings on the Ichigaya Campus.
