The history of Hosei University began in 1880. From there, the predecessors of Japanese jurisprudence poured their passion into the university, and those who aspired to study gathered to create an academic culture of freedom and progress. Since its birth as the Tokyo Hogakusha, Hosei University has produced many independent individuals "based on the spirit of democracy" and "dedicated to the public welfare," as stated in Article 1 of the university's "School Regulations. In 2020, Hosei University celebrates its 140th anniversary. Hosei University will continue to tackle new reforms with an "enterprising spirit" that is not afraid of change and continues to challenge itself as a front-runner of the times.
