Social Innovation for Solving Regional and Social Issues

With the theme "Toward a New Concept of Regionalism," the 2022 Seminar on Urban Policy for Community Development proposed a shift in the values that guide the region, in light of the spread of initiatives such as regional recycling and symbiosis zones throughout the region. In particular, the keynote lecture, "The World of Michiko Ishimure and the Future of the Region" (Yuko Tanaka, Professor Emeritus, Hosei University), focused on the "liveliness of life" at the core of Ishimure's worldview, which established Minamata literature, and recaptured regional activities and Japanese society from the words left behind in her writing.

In order to deepen this concept of regionalism, this seminar in FY2023 will focus on social innovation that aims to solve social issues. First, we will focus on "Sarutahiko Coffee," which was founded by a Tama University alumnus, and welcome Mr. Asayuki Otsuka, founder of the coffee shop, to discuss the possibilities of community development and social innovation in a keynote dialogue. The Tama Campus reorganized the Tama Regional Exchange Center (HUCC), which was established in 2013, and opened the Hosei University Social Innovation Center (SIC) this year. We have therefore decided to look back on the past 10 years of HUCC and ask HUCC alumni who are engaged in social innovation in the region to talk about the future prospects of the SIC. In addition, we would like to obtain clues for the revitalization of regionalism by focusing on the efforts of community development through paper-based bookstores in the midst of the trend toward e-books.
