Become a better researcher, English teacher, or working professional with specialized training in literature and language science!

Through specialized training in English and American literature and drama, English linguistics, and language science, we aim to nurture researchers in each field, English teachers who can make use of their knowledge in various fields such as second language acquisition and foreign language pedagogy, and people who can make use of their academic and scientific training to play a wide range of roles in society! The Department of English Language and Literature offers a wide variety of courses in English Language and Literature.
All of the courses offered by the Major in English Literature and Linguistics are small-group classes, and we strive to adopt a flexible class format that takes into account the needs of the participants.
In addition to courses in related fields offered by other graduate schools and departments of Hosei University, students can also take courses at graduate schools of other universities affiliated with the Major in English Literature and Linguistics.

  • Training for researchers in specialized fields: Training for researchers in English literature, English studies, and language science.
  • Training and retraining of middle and high school English teachers: Training of scientifically trained English teachers with expertise in second language acquisition and foreign language pedagogy.
  • Re-learning opportunities: Providing learning opportunities for people with a wide range of educational backgrounds, work experience, and ages; conducting entrance examinations for working adults.

Council for the Major in English Literature and Linguistics

The Graduate School of Hosei University is a member of the Council of Graduate Programs in English Literature and Linguistics (Eisenkyo), and students can take graduate school courses from member institutions through the credit transfer system.
In addition, a research presentation meeting is held once a year, where students who wish to present their research can receive comments from faculty members of other universities on the results of their daily research.
