Implementation report by KYOPRO student staff

The extracurricular education program "Aromatherapy for the Mind and Body" was held on Tuesday, November 22, 2022, at the 5th floor hall of the EGG DOME, Tama Campus. The new coronavirus has made people hesitant to leave their homes and unable to go out casually, giving rise to the term "coronavirus fatigue. Among these, I felt the importance of learning about aromatherapy, which is recognized in the medical field for its benefits in recovering from physical and mental problems in a peaceful manner, as well as for its use in health and beauty. Therefore, we held this program to provide participants with an opportunity to learn about the benefits and types of essential oils, which are the aromatic components of aromatherapy.

The lecturer was Kaoru Sasaki, an AEAJ-certified aromatherapy professional and general manager of the Culture Division of Tree of Life Co. In the first part of the program, we had a group work session where students experienced the fragrances of several essential oils, the types and benefits of which were kept secret from each other, and shared their thoughts about the fragrances they liked and the expected benefits. In the lecture that followed, he talked about "basic knowledge of essential oils," "differences in the efficacy of the essential oils we experienced," and "essential oils in medicine. There were many discoveries, such as the many types of fragrances and how they are made. I was especially impressed by his words that essential oils in the medical field are different from medicines prescribed by doctors, and that they are effective only because we choose them according to our own preferences. Overall, the program was a good opportunity for the students to feel more familiar with aromatherapy.

We hope that this program will help the students acquire a proper knowledge of aromatherapy and make it a part of their daily lives, for example, to reduce stress.
