The spread of the new coronavirus has had a tremendous impact on research activities at the university, but despite the various restrictions imposed by the coronavirus disaster, faculty members at Hosei University are tirelessly promoting research activities on a daily basis.
This article introduces the research activities of Professor HORIKAWA Saburo of the Faculty of Social Sciences as one example.
Invited Lecture at Columbia University (U.S.A.)
Professor Horikawa gave an invited lecture at the Graduate School of Columbia University (New York City, U.S.A.) on March 24 (local time).
The lecture was given remotely from Japan due to the Corona disaster. The lecture, entitled "To Preserve is to Change: A Sociology of Historic Preservation," was based on Professor Horikawa's recent book Why Place Matters ( (Springer, 2021), and was an analysis of community development in Otaru City, Hokkaido, Japan. Afterwards, there was a lively discussion among Professor J. Otero-Pyros, Senior Professor of the Graduate School, Professor A. Passel, Director of the Urban Studies Program at Barnard College, and more than 20 graduate students.
The lecture was well received and was followed up with an appearance on Columbia University's podcast program.

Professor Horikawa is also scheduled to give an invited lecture titled "The Rise and Institutionalization of Environmental Sociology in Japan" at the School of Sociology, Nanjing University (Nanjing, China) in the fall semester of 2022.

Professor Horikawa lectured at the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation (GSAPP), commonly abbreviated as GSAPP. GSAPP is one of the oldest traditional schools in the United States in the field of historic preservation studies, along with Cornell University, which is also a member of the Ivy League.
Nanjing University:
Nanjing University is a national university based in Jiangsu Province, People's Republic of China, founded in 1902 as "Sanjiang Normal School" and is one of the State Key Universities (211 engineering) under the direct jurisdiction of the National Education Commission of China. Professor Horikawa is currently a visiting professor at the School of Sociology of the university under the "High-end Foreign Experts Advancement Program" ("Invitation Program for Eminent Foreign Scholars").
