Prof. YAMAMOTO Kaneyoshi (Department of Frontier Bioscience) wins 2021 "Research Grant for Precious Metal" Incentive Award

On March 31, 2022, the Tanaka Kikinzoku Memorial Foundation announced the winners of the "Research Grant for Precious Metals," and Professor Kanae YAMAMOTO Kaneyoshi (Department of Frontier Bioscience) received the Incentive Award.
The theme of his application was "Development of Third Generation Metal Resource Conversion Technology Using Bioprocesses," and his research was on the creation of new metal resources.

The supply of rare metals is limited to minerals and waste.
Imported minerals have the problem of unstable supply due to the political economy of the country of origin, and waste does not increase the total amount of metals supplied to the market.
This research proposes a new way of metal resource production using metal-accumulating genome-editing Escherichia coli bacteria, which are propagated using unused dilute metal waste and the environment, as biocellular ore.
