Mr. Mitsuru Ito (4th year, Department of Frontier Bioscience ioscience and Biotechnology) received the Poster Award and the Award of Excellence at the 15th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society for Microbiology and Genomics held online from March 4 (Thu.) to 6 (Sat.), 2021.
Mr. Ito belongs to the Molecular Genetics Laboratory (Prof. Tsutomu Sato).

The winning poster, "Functional Analysis of a Novel Lysogenic Phage Involved in Bacillus subtilis sigK Reorganization," summarizes the mechanism by which viruses infecting Bacillus subtilis reorganize host genes.
Immunoglobulin genes are reorganized during human immune cell differentiation. This study revealed that bacteria also share a common mechanism of gene rearrangement.
