Professor Kazuyuki Ito, Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Faculty of Science and Engineering received "Best Paper Award".

At the IEEE International Conference on Intelligent systems held in Varna, Bulgaria from August 28 to 30, 2011, the paper Climbing Soft Robot Inspired by Octopus, presented by the Intelligent Robotics Laboratory, was selected for the Best Paper Award. This is the second time that our laboratory has received this award, following 2012.
This international conference on intelligent systems has a history of about 20 years, and researchers from all over the world, including Europe, attended the conference and presented various methods for making intelligent systems. This year, due to travel restrictions caused by the Corona disaster, we were unable to attend the conference in person, so we had to participate online. However, we made full use of presentation support tools and an online conference system, and were able to give a presentation that was as good as in previous years. The robot presented this time was designed based on the framework of "using the mechanical properties of a soft body to realize intelligent locomotion," taking a hint from the locomotion mechanism of an octopus, which is an organism. We plan to continue developing various robots to break the stereotype of "intelligence = brain = computer. Please look forward to further progress in the future.
