The 48th Hosei University Graduate School Seminar on Urban Planning and Urban Policy was held

On November 11, 2023, the 48th Hosei University Graduate School Seminar on Urban Planning and Urban Policy was held at the Ichigaya Campus, following the previous year's seminar. Although it was a cold day, many people attended the keynote lecture in the morning, and as the organizer, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all those who participated.

In order to deepen the "concept of regionalism" derived from the previous year's keynote speech (Yuko Tanaka, Professor Emeritus, Hosei University (former President) "Ishimure Michiko's World and Future of the Region"), the 48th conference was held under the common theme of " Social Innovation to Solve Regional and Social Issues" with Otsuka Tomoyuki (President, Sarudahiko Coffee Co. Following the keynote discussion "Community Development through Coffee" with Asayuki Otsuka, a graduate of the University (President of SARUTAHIKO COFFEE Co., Ltd. ), discussions were held in two breakout sessions from the approaches of " University and Community" and "Bookstore and Community" .

The following is a summary of the keynote dialogue, the two breakout sessions, and the poster session in which graduate and undergraduate students described their research and community practices. We will also provide the transcript of the keynote dialogue as soon as it is ready . We hope that those of you who were not able to attend the event will take the time to read it .

Keynote Discussion " Urban Development through Coffee, Social Innovation by SARUTAHIKO COFFEE

In order to capture the relationship between community development and social innovation, this year's session took the form of a keynote dialogue with Asayuki Otsuka, who founded "Sarutahiko Coffee" after graduating from Faculty of Letters University of Tokyo in 2004. Mr. Otsuka kindly provided us with hot coffee before the opening of the event and talked about the coffee pyramid, which shows the order of coffee quality and distribution volume, his involvement with coffee bean production areas, and the twists and turns that led to the establishment of Sarutahiko Coffee. Mr. Otsuka talked about his involvement with coffee bean producers and the twists and turns that led to the establishment of his company. The discussion was focused on how to strike a balance between the "essence" of what Sarutahiko Coffee aims for, "to make the world happy through good coffee," and the "money" aspect of running a company in a capitalist society, making a profit, and sustaining it. The discussion focused on how to strike a balance between the "essence" of what Sarutahiko Coffee aims for and the "money" involved in running a company, making a profit and sustaining it in a capitalist society. Mr. Otsuka commented, "At Sarutahiko Coffee, too, it is pure pride that gives birth to originality and creates one-of-a-kind value. First of all, we must cherish that starting point. The same is true for city planning.

Section Meeting 2 "Bookstores Revitalize Cities" Poster Session

This subcommittee was organized to focus on the growing number of people who are starting new bookstores and selling and buying paper books in an age when digital books and online shopping are flourishing. Five panelists were invited to talk about how they started their bookstores and their current activities. Megumi Okuyama (Huckleberry Books) and Hideaki Tokoro (Hommachi Kashiwa) talked about the one-box used book fair in Kashiwa City, Kaoruko Naoi (CHICACU Bookstore) talked about shared bookshelves in Saitama City, and Soya Harayama (books Densen no Tori) talked about turning her home into a used bookstore in Matsumoto City. What all five reports had in common was that selling and buying books became an event, creating a time and place for people to interact with each other.
