Hosei University's Institute for Okinawan Studies was founded in 1972, the year Okinawa returned to Japan. It was established to inform the mainland of the actual situation in Okinawa as the issue of Okinawa became a major political issue in Japan. Since its establishment, the institute has conducted a series of surveys and research to comprehensively view the Okinawan islands from an interdisciplinary perspective. In recent years, the institute has broadened its perspective to include the Asian region and has conducted a variety of research activities that place Okinawa within that region. As a research institute open to the public, the Institute publishes publications such as "Okinawa Bunka Kenkyu" (Bulletin of Okinawan Studies) and "Ryukyu no Dialect", holds related lectures and symposiums, and collects and provides access to Okinawan-related literature and materials.
