Hosei University Educational Corporation (Location: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President: HIROSE Katsuya) introduced "Aicasa," an umbrella sharing service provided by Nature Innovation Group, Inc. The introduction of "aikasa" was made possible by a proposal from SASH (SDGs Action Students of HOSEI), an SDGs student organization accredited by the university.
Aikasa" is characterized by the ability to borrow a plastic umbrella and return it to the nearest spot when the rain stops, without having to purchase a plastic umbrella. User registration enables the system to keep track of umbrella use and loss, and boasts a high return rate. In addition, the system is durable and repairable, and is expected to reduce the number of umbrellas that are discarded. After the introduction of the system, the number of "aikasa" users and the amount of discarded umbrellas will be regularly monitored, and the University and SASH will plan further activities.
Background of the introduction of "aikasa" by SASH
SASH is a university-accredited organization established in June 2019, to which students who are actively engaged in activities that contribute to the achievement of the SDGs belong. Since its establishment, SASH has organized numerous events and programs that contribute to the achievement of the SDGs. Through these activities, the members learned of the large amount of umbrellas discarded on campus, and conducted interviews with student centers that offer a free rental service utilizing forgotten umbrellas on campus, as well as activities to collect unwanted umbrellas on campus. However, they found that "the return rate of umbrellas was low" and "it did not lead to a reduction in the amount of umbrellas discarded." They focused on an external "aikasa" service that could simultaneously reduce the amount of umbrellas discarded, improve convenience for students, and raise awareness of the SDGs, which led to their proposal to the university.
The proposal included estimates of the number of users and the amount of umbrella waste reduction based on an on-campus questionnaire survey, as well as a strong commitment to use the Aicasa service to raise student awareness, reduce the university's overall environmental impact, and contribute to achieving the SDGs.
