In this seminar, we will compare and contrast the attempts made to support the lives of the socially vulnerable in Europe and Japan, in line with the circumstances in each region. The course will cover a wide range of aspects of life, including medical care, long-term care, employment, adult education, childbirth and childcare, not only through government administration, laws and systems, but also through mutual human assistance ("solidarity") and the activities of civil society, such as NPOs and NGOs.
The seminar will include the following activities
(1) Literature subscription: Participants will read important literature (mainly in Japanese) related to the theme.
(2) Group work: Participants will be divided into groups according to their own interests and report on what they have researched.
(3) Debate: Groups will debate each other on topics related to the theme of the seminar.
Sub-seminars are held every other week (mainly in the spring semester) for preparation of thesis reports and group work.
(5) Graduation thesis report: Students report on the progress of their preparation for the final thesis of the seminar (as needed, for 4th year students only).
⑥ Seminar camp and field trip: to be held once a year.
