Seminar Outline

Freedom, human rights, democracy, representation, equality, ownership, otherness, discrimination, power, peace, labor, poverty, boundaries, justice, gender, sexuality, and so on are concepts that have been the subject of much discussion in the long ideological and cultural tradition of contemporary society. This seminar will focus on the concepts of "social justice" and "social justice" in Europe and in modern society. This seminar aims to examine and understand the content and background of historical debates on these concepts through the analysis of texts, images, and videos in the humanities, including European and modern Japanese thought, and to consider their significance in contemporary society.

Seminar Details

  1. The instructor will provide explanations of thinkers and writers, their works, background knowledge, and significance.
  2. Close reading of thought texts (presentation and discussion)
    In 2017, "Having Roots" (Iwanami Bunko) by 20th century French thinker Simone Veilleux (1909-1943).
  3. Writing of reports during the summer and winter breaks (summer: on the class texts (4th year students: on the research group's final paper), winter: on the students' own research) and discussion with faculty and students based on these reports.
  4. Seminar camp (scheduled for February. Location to be decided. (Location to be determined; joint camps with seminars at other universities and faculties are currently being planned.)
  5. Off-campus study at cinemas, art museums, museums, etc. in the Tokyo metropolitan area.
    In the spring semester of 2017, the students visited the "Bruegel's Tower of Babel" exhibition at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum after prior study.
