Seminar: Seminar on International Society (Learning about Africa / Learning from Africa)
Introduction of Seminar: Our seminar is called "Africa Seminar". Our seminar is called "Africa Seminar" because our faculty member specializes in contemporary African literature and what we study together is about Africa. We try to understand the continent "now" from various perspectives, including history, economy, international relations, movies, literature, music, fashion, and so on. As for individual research, every year, half of the students choose a theme related to Africa, while the other half focus on something other than Africa based on their own interests (e.g., black music, immigration, racism, minority issues, etc.). Almost all students learn about Africa for the first time in this seminar, but by the time they graduate, they should have a lot of knowledge! The best thing about this seminar is that we study and play as hard as we can, and we get along very well without any barriers between seniors and juniors. We study hard, but we also have a lot of fun and share many things together outside of the seminar.
Main courses: Cultures of English-speaking Countries III, International Relations Studies VI, Seminar on International Society

◆Research Themes: Globalization, Religious and Ethnic Conflicts, Regional Development, Symbiotic Society and Research on Minorities ◆Seminars: Seminar on International Society (Anthropology of Tourism and City Planning: Resourceful Culture, Environment and Religion)
◆Introduction: This is the "Cultural Anthropology Seminar". In this seminar, students learn anthropological research focusing on "tourism and urban development" while paying attention to the phenomenon of resourceification of culture, environment, and religion. In addition to classroom learning, the seminar also promotes fieldwork education, and in FY2023, the students (jointly with an anthropology seminar at Otsuma Women's University) conducted practical training in photoethnography to develop a multifaceted perspective to understand tourism phenomena, especially in urban areas.
The themes of the seminar students' graduation theses and conference presentations are quite varied, including the sustainability of anime tourism, SNS and gyaru culture, the transformation of "half" discourse, professional sports teams and local communities, multicultural conviviality in areas with large foreign populations, school education and multicultural conviviality, and intangible folk cultural assets and local communities. In other words, while the main themes of the seminar are "tourism and urban development" and multicultural conviviality, the students are conducting their research with a great deal of freedom.

◆Research Theme: Mobile Communications, Research on Real Space Information Control on the Internet, Digital ID ◆Seminar: Exercise of Information Culture (Discovery and discussion of problems in information science and technology)
◆Introduction of Seminar: This is a seminar to consider social deployment of information science and technology. Information science and technology, such as computers and the Internet, have made tremendous progress in just a few decades. They are now deployed all over the world as important social infrastructures and are expected to change their forms in the future. However, without learning about the structure and characteristics of the communication infrastructure that we have come to "take for granted," we do not know not only what problems are occurring but also how to even think about them. Because it is something we use on a daily basis, knowing its principles, structure, characteristics, and risks can help us avoid unnecessary problems and gain a richer view of society. We will not only accumulate this knowledge but also consider how to utilize it.

International Relations. History of Pacific Island Relations (especially Micronesia, Okinawa, and Japan). Micronesian Studies.
Seminar or Research Theme
◆Research Themes: In the seminar, each student will master the methodology of international relations and explore his/her own role and potential to support or change the contemporary world by pursuing his/her own research theme and discussing the themes of other seminar students as well. ◆Seminar: Seminar on International Society (Questioning and reworking "International Relations")
◆Introduction: This is a seminar to study international relations. Firstly, as a reexamination of your own perception of "international relations," you will learn that you are a being who lives in various relationships in the modern world, supporting or causing suffering to someone you do not know. Secondly, they will learn about their own roles and possibilities in international relations, and find ways to reweave international relations. Although the themes of the seminar students are diverse (see the list of individual research themes), while learning the methodology of international relations, they will also understand the interconnectedness of these themes. Through the above, the students will develop a flexible antennae of sensitivity and learn how to research, discuss, think, and communicate. Another feature of this seminar is the "collaboration" rooted in the originality of each student. We decided not to have a seminar leader among the seminar students. In addition to each seminar, the "collaboration" includes research in Okinawa, Kanagawa, Korea, Micronesia, etc., conference reports, and exchanges with other university students in Japan and abroad. In addition, the annual "Grand Reunion" organized by seminar alumni is a "joint" event where current seminar students report on their research and alumni who are struggling with work and child-rearing learn about each other's lifestyles. Senior and junior students are close to each other across generations, but they do not get used to each other. The "collaboration" turns into "cooperation" not because it is the "Imaizumi Seminar" but because it is a seminar for students who continue to learn together with Imaizumi.

◆Research Theme: Comparative Literature and Culture ◆Seminar: Seminar in Language and Culture (Comparative Literature and Culture Studies: Awareness of the significance of studying in Faculty of Intercultural Communication )
◆Seminar Research: This seminar is about "Comparative Literature (Culture)". To put it more simply, the main purpose of this seminar is to think about literature (culture) by making some kind of comparison across one framework (country, region, genre, etc.). For example, is "I am a Cat" actually a "pastiche" of foreign literature? or "What are the characteristics of Haruki Murakami's translation of "The Great Gatsby"? What is the excellence of the film adaptation of "The Great Gatsby"? or, when considering literature and film, is it necessary to consider the "feelings of the author"? or meta-questions such as, "What is the author's feeling? Of course, even if you do not have any of the above specific questions, if you have a desire to think about literature, film, etc. without being bound by any one framework, I think you are suited for this class. In the class, you will first learn the basics of "comparison" and how to discuss with each other, then deepen your own interests, and finally crystallize them in the form of a paper. If you are at all interested in this class, please come to the information session.

◆Introduction: Hello. My name is Ryo Onishi, and I am in charge of the Seminar in Languages and Cultures. The common theme of this seminar is "Culture and Society in Spanish-speaking Countries. Each seminar student is expected to set a specific theme according to his/her own interests and concerns, and to complete a seminar paper on it. No previous study of Spanish is required. The term "Spanish-speaking countries" includes Spain and other countries in the Americas, from Mexico in the north to Argentina in the south, so the area to be covered is vast. While there are, of course, many different cultures, it will be an enjoyable experience to explore with fellow seminar students the elements that are common to all of these cultures. In past seminar discussions, in addition to themes related to history and society, some students have discussed the history of Spanish soccer, the fashion represented by ZARA, and the success of Latin American artists who are dominating the U.S. hit charts. This is an at-home seminar where the students are the main participants, so if you are at all interested in the culture of Spanish-speaking countries, please come and join us.

◆Research Topics: Thinking about language and human beings through various texts, mainly Japanese literature from classic to modern times ◆Seminar: Seminar in Language and Culture (World of Literature)
◆Introduction to the seminar: The faculty member's specialty is Japanese literature, but as you know, he also teaches translation-related classes, so of course there is a place for students who are interested in foreign languages and cultures. While appreciating a variety of literary works (and even movies), from classics to modern and contemporary works, sometimes including foreign works, we will learn methods of analysis and research, apply literary theory, and challenge ourselves to see how far we can go in our reading of literature. We would like to think together about anything related to language, not limited to literature.
The seminar is ideally student-driven, so your opinions will be strongly reflected in the content of each semester and the presence or absence of camps. There is plenty of time for discussion and sharing of ideas, so I think this seminar is suited for students who do not mind, and in fact find it enjoyable. However, it is also a seminar that respects the time of the individual, while placing importance on having fun together, so I think it is also suitable for students who are not attracted to group activities.

◆Research Themes: Theory of Place, Film and Animation Studies, Modern Literature ◆Seminar: Seminar in Representational Culture (Theory of Place)
◆Introduction: "Place" literally supports us from the feet up. The main purpose of this seminar is to rethink artless culture from the viewpoint of "place". In the spring semester, we will jointly research a certain theme, and the fall semester will be devoted to the presentation of each seminar student's free research and guidance in writing papers. It is possible to do a variety of free research. Past graduation research projects (not only papers but also works are acceptable) include "Tokyo in Foreign Films," "Tokyo in 'Sanshiro' and 'Youth,'" "Comparison of Tourism Policies in Japan and France," "Recent History of Love Hotels," "Tadao Ando's Dream, Chichu Art Museum," and "The Ideal House from Ghibli Movies.
Although we also read literature, we place the greatest emphasis on improving observational skills and sensitivity. For this purpose, we set aside days for viewing artworks and fieldwork. For example, we have visited the Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum, Kanda Jimbocho, Omoteyama Road Hills, Seijo, Ghibli Museum, and various sacred places of anime.
We hope that by knowing what kind of "place" you are living in and integrating your knowledge, concepts and experiences, you will proactively and deeply enjoy your life.

◆Research interests: ◆Seminars: Seminar on International Society (Thinking about Society from Language / Thinking about Language from Society)
◆Introduction: In the seminar, we will consider society from language and language from society. Among them, we would like to think especially about "societies in which more than one language is used", so-called "multilingual societies". A multilingual society does not only refer to countries with more than one official language, such as Belgium and Switzerland. Societies with Hispanic populations in the United States and societies with German speakers, such as those in the Alsace region of France, are multilingual societies as well. Furthermore, the relationship between standard variants and regional variants (so-called standard language and dialect) can also be considered multilingual. We would like seminar students to freely set their own themes and discuss the balance of power among languages in such multilingual societies, the language learning system, people's attitudes toward languages, historical processes, and so on. There is no particular preference as to where the seminar students have studied or what languages they are proficient in. We look forward to your participation if you are interested in language and society and multilingual society.
