Mr. Jun Nishiyama, a master's student in Major in Electrical and Electronic Engineering Graduate School of Science and Technology, received the Outstanding Student Award from the Society of Instrument and Control Engineers (SICE).

In the robot navigation, he focused on the eye structure of a jumping spider and showed that by using multiple images with different focal distances, the spider can locate passable places by relatively low-load image processing without recognizing the detailed 3D environment, and can move while avoiding obstacles and depressions. The system is expected to be applied to automatic driving of cars and navigation of robots that work together with people in daily life.
