In February 2023, the Hosei University Rooftop Greening Maintenance Project, for which the Hosei University Environmental Center serves as the secretariat, won the Encouragement Award in the group category of the 16th Shinjuku Eco One Grand Prix Contest sponsored by Shinjuku City.
On Sunday, February 26, 2023, Naoko Enomoto of Hosei University's Environment Center attended the award ceremony held at the Shinjuku Municipal Environmental Learning Information Center (Eco Gallery Shinjuku), where the award was presented by Shinjuku City Mayor Kenichi Yoshizumi.
The project is based on the Green Terrace, which was created in 2005 as a result of collaboration between students and faculty members, and is designed to conserve local biodiversity, mitigate and adapt to climate change, and combat the heat island effect, with an awareness of the biotope network that connects the Imperial Palace, Kitanomaru Park, Yasukuni Shrine, and then to Sotobori Park. We are working to create a "beloved garden at Hosei University.
In FY2022, more than 30 students from both liberal arts and sciences, undergraduate and graduate schools, have registered for the garden, which will be a "place for relaxation" for students and faculty members, a place where endangered black killifish swim in the gourd pond in the garden, trees and flowers grow, and a space where birds, butterflies, and other "living things" can grow and inhabit. The garden is expanding into a "beloved garden at Hosei University," filled with trees, plants, and flowers, and a space where birds, butterflies, and other living creatures can grow and inhabit.
In the future, we will challenge its potential as a "place to learn and practice together common issues in the region" connected with local nature, including "conservation of local biodiversity" and "mitigation and adaptation to climate change," including butterflies, insects, birds, and native and non-native species.
On Monday, March 13, 2023, we will hold " Beloved Garden at Hosei University, " envisioning what the garden will look like a decade from now, full of commitment.
Now, I look forward to seeing you all again at the "Beloved Garden at Hosei University".

In fiscal 2022, measures to prevent the spread of the new coronavirus infection law were relaxed, and organic vegetables and fruits could be grown in the vegetable garden plot throughout the year. In the "wall plot," temperatures were measured "inside and outside the green area" with a thermometer equipped with a black bulb and "green area and non-green area" with an infrared thermometer. (August 23, 2022, "August Garden versus Beloved Garden at Hosei University").
Measured mainly the temperature of "greening areas and non-greening areas" with "yaburan" and "moss" planted for "climate change mitigation and adaptation. (August 23, 2022, "August Garden vs. Beloved Garden at Hosei University," held on August 23, 2022).
In "THE HOSEI GARDEN QUEST" held on November 11, 2022, participants shared "things they noticed" while walking around the garden and searched for "seeds of concern" from "particulars" including "view," "resting place," and "organisms/growth/habitat space" in "Hosei University's Beloved Garden.
The Environmental Center received the "Sustainable Campus Award 2022" in the student activity category sponsored by the Council for the Promotion of Sustainable Campus, and was awarded "Eco Pro 2022" and "Hosei University's Garden" in the "Council for the Promotion of Sustainable Campus (CAS-NET JAPAN) 2022 Annual Conference". Hosei University Rooftop Greening Maintenance and Management Project" at the "Sustainable Campus Award 2022" and "CAS-NET JAPAN 2022 Annual Conference".
