On Wednesday, June 22, 2022, the "Hosei University Rooftop Gardening Maintenance Project" held its third round of activities for the "Beloved Garden at Hosei University" with members who came in between classes despite the weather that looked like it might rain.
Naoko Enomoto of the Environmental Center explained the characteristics of the potatoes (Baron's potatoes) and selected bulbs grown in the vegetable garden plot and the characteristics of the weeds in plot D that plagued the members during the maintenance of the garden in FY2021 under the theme "Gift from the Garden.
Next, in the vegetable garden plot, the participants harvested "potatoes (Danshon imo)" grown without fertilizers and pesticides since winter 2021, planted "cucumber (Natsu suzumi)" seedlings (donated by Naoko Enomoto of the Environmental Center), which were grown from seeds with the aim of creating a "Green Curtain," and "curcuma" and "amaryllis" bulbs.
Finally, we worked with the members to take care of weeds mainly in the E and A plots around the Hyoutan Pond, which have become a serious early summer issue in the "Beloved Garden at Hosei University". This time, we mowed mainly "dokudami," a perennial herb that has long underground stems that spread around even in the shallow soil of the garden, while it has long been used for medicinal, culinary, and horticultural purposes.
In March 2022, the Hosei University Rooftop Gardening Maintenance Project won a prize in the 2021 Chiyoda Biodiversity Awards sponsored by Chiyoda Ward for its efforts to create a "beloved garden at Hosei University" that is aware of the biotope network in the "outer moat" that straddles Chiyoda and Shinjuku wards. In FY 2022, as the "Hosei University Rooftop Gardening Maintenance Project," we will invite members to propose what they would like to realize at the Green Terrace, our activity base, and support their proactive activities.
The next project is scheduled for early to mid July 2022. We look forward to seeing you all at "Beloved Garden at Hosei University".
