Global warming is affected by the accumulation of our daily actions in our educational and research activities on campus and in our university life.

As a first step, in March 2021, with the aim of promoting "stairway use" instead of the convenient elevator use that has become habitual in our daily lives, we will launch "Take the Stairs at HOSEI" in March 2021 to call for environmentally conscious "behavior change" from habitual behavior patterns toward the realization of a sustainable society. Take the Stairs at HOSEI 2021 - Five Mysteries Ekopyon Wants to Solve and Stairs Leading to the Future" was held in March 2021. Of the 21 participants who made it to the end, 14 were able to achieve the goals they had set for themselves.

In June 2021, a second special project for Environment Month, "Take the Stairs at HOSEI 2021 - Seven Wonders of Hosei and Stairs Leading to the Future that Ekopyon Wants to Know" was planned. This time, when reporting the number of steps taken, which is a guideline for "stairway use," participants will be challenged with the "Seven Wonders of Hosei that Ekopyon wants to know" related to global environmental issues.

The "Take the Stairs at HOSEI 2021" project will be reported in the "22nd Environmental Exhibition" to be held in the fall of 2021 and in the "Hosei University Environmental Report 2021" to be published in June 2022.

In the measures to prevent the spread of new coronavirus infection, avoidance of the "3 densities" is being called for.
This project is designed to help many people who refrain from going to training gyms out of concern about the spread of new coronavirus infection, to "reduce energy use" and "increase leg strength" through "stair use," which burns about three times as many calories as walking on level ground and is expected to increase basal metabolism and leg strength, including the thighs. We hope that this will be an initiative aimed at "stairway use that lasts into the future," which simultaneously aims to "reduce energy use" and "improve health" by building a body that is resistant to new coronavirus infection and by eliminating lack of exercise.

Application Period June 2, 2021 (Wednesday) - June 17, 2021 (Thursday)
Implementation period

Monday, June 21, 2021 - Saturday, July 24, 2021

Subjects

Undergraduate and graduate students of the University

Targets and approximate number of steps

(1) Default goal: Up one floor, down two floors (8,000 steps/day)

(2) Campaign goal: Up 2 floors, down 3 floors (10,000 steps/day)

(3) Challenge goal: 3 floors up, 4 floors down (12,000 steps/day)

Expected effects

Eliminate lack of exercise
・ Improve health by improving basal metabolism and increasing leg strength
・ Prevent the spread of new coronavirus infection by avoiding "3-density" in elevators
・ Improve productivity by reducing elevator waiting time
・ Raise awareness of energy conservation Reduction of energy consumption by
・ Increase in the service life of elevators
*If you participate in the campaign goal, the annual carbon dioxide reduction effect (approx. 3.3 kg/person); if you participate in the challenge goal, the annual carbon dioxide reduction effect (approx. 6.6 kg/person).

How to participate

Please declare your affiliation, name, and one of the goals from "Goals and Steps" above by sending an e-mail to the Environment Center (ickankyo@hosei.ac.jp).

Participation

Please take sufficient measures to prevent infectious diseases, including the use of masks and avoidance of the three tight spaces (tight, dense, and close), by referring to the University's guidelines on the prevention of new coronavirus infections.
Please refer to the following rule book (Campaign Participation - A Promise to Ekopyon) and participate in the "Take the Stairs Campaign at HOSEI 2021" in a healthy manner and with the aim of preventing global warming.
Participants are required to answer questions related to the "Seven Wonders of Hosei" at the time of application.
Participants are required to answer the questions related to "Weekly Walks" and "Seven Wonders of Hosei that Ekopyon would like to know" on Google Form at the end of each week.
Participants are requested to submit a report (about 200 words) to the Environmental Center by July 31, 2021 (Sat.).
All participants will receive Ekopyon chopsticks and special Ekopyon goods according to the difficulty level of the selected goal, the ranking of the number of steps taken, and the percentage of correct answers. Please note that the activities will be introduced in the "Hosei University Environmental Report", the Environment Center's website, and at the "Environmental Exhibition".
