The severe heat that has been continuing since the end of the rainy season in June has subsided at the "Green Terrace," the base of the project, making it the perfect time to create the "Beloved Garden at Hosei University, full of commitment" for next spring.
On Friday, September 30, 2022, the "Hosei University Rooftop Gardening Maintenance Project" held its sixth event under the theme of "Practice of Gardening: Beloved Gardens at Hosei University".
First, Naoko Enomoto of the Environment Center explained the highlights and birth story of the "Green Terrace," focusing on environmental considerations, and the creatures that inhabit the garden, including the endangered "killifish." Then, as the hot days were still to come, she presented sunflowers and vegetable seeds aimed at adapting to climate change, and plant seedlings selected under the "Practice of Gardening" theme. Plant seedlings (donated by Naoko Enomoto of the Environmental Center) and bulbs that will bloom next spring were the main items used to maintain the "beloved garden at Hosei University, which is full of attention to detail.
This time, members called on us to exterminate "weeds," including "dogtooth violet" and other "weeds" that had bloomed reddish-purple flowers in season to fill a 70-liter garbage bag, mainly in Lot A in front of the "beloved garden full of particulars" and in Lot D at the back of the garden.
In March 2022, the Hosei University Rooftop Gardening Maintenance Project, for which the Hosei University Environmental Center serves as the secretariat, won a prize in the 2021 Chiyoda Biodiversity Awards sponsored by Chiyoda Ward in recognition of its efforts to create a "beloved garden at Hosei University" that is aware of the biotope network in the "outer moat" that straddles Chiyoda and Shinjuku wards. The garden was awarded the " 2021 Chiyoda Biodiversity Grand Prize" sponsored by Chiyoda Ward.
I look forward to seeing you all at the "Beloved Garden at Hosei University.
At the beginning of the presentation, I explained the highlights of the "Green Terrace," the story of its birth, and the organisms that inhabit it.
Members took their time to design "tulip" and "Japanese narcissus" bulbs for Plot B around Hyotan Pond.
Near the Hyotan Pond, "Kinmokusei" planted in "August Garden vs. Beloved Garden at Hosei University" emits sweet fragrance and soothes us.
In the vegetable garden plot, "Red Azuma" and "Kintoki" are growing on the wall.
Curcuma" makes us feel like in the tropics for a while.
The "Hinomiao Cedar" planted in the "Season's Greetings versus the beloved garden at Hosei University". Will it grow into a Christmas tree this winter? This time, members of our group exterminated "Inudate" in the surrounding area.
In the vegetable garden plot, we planted "Solanaceae". This time, members persistently exterminated weeds in the D plot at the back of the garden, the most difficult part of the maintenance of the "beloved garden full of attention".
After the project, it was completely dusk by the time we finished cleaning up the tools.
